The Chinese manufacturer Huawei has released several surprising phones in recent years. The devices from the Huawei P and Mate series have become one of the most coveted smartphones. The Huawei P30 series will be revealed later this month. These high-end phones will incorporate a noticeably smaller notch than last year, which means that an even larger screen surface can be realized.
The rear of the P30 will be characterized by a new camera system, consisting of three vertically placed cameras. One of these cameras has a periscopic lens, to create a large optical zoom range. There is talk of a 10x optical zoom lens, similar to the zoom technology Oppo demonstrated last month at MWC 2019.
A recently published design patent shows Huawei is considering developing another smartphone with a zoom camera. In addition to a periscopic camera lens, this phone has another special feature: an extra display is placed directly under the triple camera system. This design is possibly meant for the upcoming Mate 30 series.
Huawei smartphone with dual screen
The design patent was filed on November 28, 2018 by law firm Boehmert & Boehmert from Berlin, on behalf of Huawei Technologies. The patent was published by WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) on 28 February 2019.
The front of the phone looks a lot like the expected Huawei P30, although the notch of the patented model is even slimmer. It is an almost full screen design with a very small recess for a sensor. This will likely be a Time-of-Flight sensor for 3D face recognition. The sensor is placed halfway in the bezel, to keep the size of the notch as minimal as possible.
The back of this Huawei smartphone houses a triple camera. The third lens differs from the other two lenses, the square-shaped lens indicates that Huawei wants to use the same periscopic camera system for this model as with the P30. However, the cameras of the patented phone are positioned horizontally, instead of vertically. To the left of the three cameras are a flash and a laser autofocus system.
The most remarkable feature on this mobile phone is the dual screen. On the back, an almost square screen is placed directly below the triple camera. It’s an ideal display for capturing selfies. This will make it possible to take high-quality portrait photos with the advanced camera system on the back. Quite cleverly conceived by the engineers at Huawei.
A dual display smartphone is not entirely new. End of last year the Vivo NEX Dual Display was released, this device is also equipped with a second display. Vivo decided to skip the front camera entirely, in order to create a full-screen design.
The Vivo phone is also equipped with face recognition, but this feature is only available via the display on the back. The same goes for the recently announced ZTE Nubia X Dual Screen phone. Judging by the notch, Huawei seems to maintain the face recognition function at the front.
The Huawei Mate 30 smartphones will be introduced in the second half of 2019. It seems likely that Huawei will use this innovative design for its new Mate devices.
