Samsung annually produces a large number of smartphone models. Although most attention is usually paid to the high-end Galaxy S-series and the foldable Z-series, it is the budget and mid-range A-series devices that ensure the highest sales numbers. From cheap to expensive, Samsung has announced the Galaxy A02, A12, A22, A32, A42, A52 and A72 this year. In addition, some extra powerful ‘s’ variants have been introduced, such as the Galaxy A52s.
The Galaxy A5x has been one of Samsung’s best-selling phones for years. As a result, many are now looking forward to the successor to the Galaxy A52. The new model is expected around March 2022. The design of the Galaxy A53 5G already leaked last month. In terms of design, the smartphone will have many similarities with its predecessor, nevertheless there are a number of small differences.
Samsung A53 5G without 3.5mm jack
Using all available information, in-house graphic designer Parvez Khan, aka Technizo Concept, has created a series of 3D product renders of the Samsung Galaxy A53. The product images show the new A-series model in a white color. In addition, the device is expected to be released in black, light blue and orange.
The most noticeable change is without a doubt the omission of the 3.5mm jack. Galaxy S series users have had to do without a headphone jack for some time. Some find this no problem and are just as happy to use a wireless Bluetooth headset.
Others specifically opt for a Galaxy A-series smartphone because these models do have a 3.5mm connection. This target group will have to consider switching to another brand in the coming year, because it is now clear that Samsung will not only omit this beloved connection with the A53, but also with the Galaxy A73 and A33.
The lack of 3.5mm headphones creates extra space at the bottom, so the SIM card compartment is moved from the top to the bottom. You will also find the USB-C connection, a microphone and a speaker here.
The device delivers a full screen experience, although the bottom bezel will still be fairly thick. The display size and resolution are expected to remain the same. The display brightness may be increased, the A52 has a peak brightness of 800 nits. Presumably, the flat 6.5” Full HD+ AMOLED display will have a 120Hz refresh rate. That is also the case with the Galaxy A52 5G, the 4G model, on the other hand, has a 90Hz screen.
As with its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy A53 5G will be equipped with an in-display fingerprint sensor. In our Galaxy A52 review we found that this sensor works accurately, but it is certainly not one of the fastest of its kind. Whether the new model will be equipped with an improved fingerprint scanner remains unknown for the time being.
Furthermore, the phone will be slightly thinner than its predecessor. The device is expected to be 8.14mm thick – compared to 8.4mm with the A52. In addition, the A53 will have a flat back, without rounded corners. We also expect to see this design update with the Galaxy S22. As usual with Samsung phones the physical buttons are positioned on the right side of the device. With the volume keys above and the on/off button below.
Taking photos and videos
A punch hole camera will be integrated to take selfies. Presumably the same 32 megapixel image sensor will be used. Samsung usually provides the A5x model series with a high-resolution selfie camera. High numbers appeal to young people, who are an important target group for the A-series models.
Of course, there will also be plenty of filters and effects available to brighten up your selfies. In addition, it is possible to activate background blur – making the subject stand out better. The front camera can also be used for video calls. Videos can be captured with the front camera in 4K UHD @ 30fps.
A quad-camera is placed on the back of the Galaxy A53. In terms of design, it will be almost identical to the quad-camera system of the A52. The design is further refined with smooth curves, allowing it to flow more beautifully into the rear panel.
Very little is known about the camera configuration. Most likely, the 2022 model will again be equipped with a 64-megapixel main camera. It will also incorporate an optical image stabilization system (OIS). The Samsung A73 is expected to be the first and only A-series model to be equipped with a 108MP camera.
Whether the 12MP ultra-wide camera, the 5MP macro camera and the 5MP depth camera will be changed remains a surprise. However, there is a real chance that the camera system will undergo minimal changes in 2022, in order to reduce costs and cope with increasing competition from Chinese brands.
Android 12 smartphone
The Galaxy A53 5G will be one of the first Samsung smartphones to run Android 12 out of the box. Before that, the Galaxy S21 FE and Galaxy S22 series are expected first, in January and February 2022 respectively. A month (or possibly two months) later, the A53 will appear on the scene. This device may be presented simultaneously with the Galaxy A33 – which will also run on the new Android 12 OS. The A73 is expected some time later.
Samsung offers 3 years of Android OS updates and 4 years of security updates. That means that Samsung A53 users can expect an update to Android 13, Android 14 and eventually to Android 15 – by then we will be in 2025.
Little information is known about the chipset at the moment. Most likely, a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC will be deployed again. Under the hood of the A52 5G you will find the Snapdragon 750G. The later introduced A52s is powered by the extra powerful Snapdragon 778G. With the Galaxy A52, Samsung chose to release both a 4G and a 5G model. In 2022, only a 5G model is expected. Presumably, multiple memory variants will be released with 6GB / 8GB RAM and 128GB / 256GB ROM.
It is expected that Samsung will provide the Galaxy A-series models in 2022 with a microSD memory card slot, in order to expand the storage memory. Unfortunately, this functionality can no longer be found in the Galaxy S21 series. It is expected that Samsung will eventually choose to omit this compartment from the A-series models as well. However, that does not appear to be the case next year.
Regarding the battery capacity, last month GalaxyClub reported that the battery capacity is increasing. The A53 will most likely be equipped with a 4,860 mAh battery. That is significantly larger than the 4,500 mAh battery found in its predecessor – despite the A52 having a similar 6.5” 120Hz screen.
In practice, this will mean that the Galaxy A53 delivers an even longer battery life than its predecessor – which lasts about two days with average use. Unfortunately, Samsung is not exactly at the forefront when it comes to fast charging technology. Presumably, the 2022 model will again support 25W wired charging. Wireless charging will also be an option.
It remains to be seen whether and which charger Samsung will provide in the sales box. Perhaps Samsung will again include a slower 15W charger. In any case, it seems unlikely that a 25W charger will be included.
We further assume that the phone will be IP67 certified again. That means the phone is both dust and water resistant. You can submerge the device up to 1 meter deep for 30 minutes. A heavy downpour of rain won’t do any harm.
Samsung Galaxy A53 Price & Availability
The Galaxy A52 has been available since March this year as a 4G and 5G model for a starting price of €350 and €430 respectively. Only a 5G variant is expected of the Galaxy A53. The price may be adjusted slightly downwards, resulting in a suggested retail price of approx. €400.
After all, only a very few new features seem to be added -apart from new hardware and software- and the 3.5mm headphone jack will be omitted. To keep this traditionally popular model affordable for a large audience, Samsung will have to put the device on the market for a competitive price/quality ratio.
There is currently no information about the introduction and release date. Korean media previously announced that the South Korean manufacturer intends to produce 28 million units of this particular Samsung phone. Production will take place in the first quarter of 2022. Presumably, this will result in the Samsung A53 5G arriving around March/April 2022.
